On February 22, 2022, (2-22-22) Mikey's Dad, Willard W. Wemple would have been 100 years old.  We will be following Dad's time in the First Battalion, 24th Marines, Baker company, from February 19th to March 17th, 1945, in....Operation Detachment.

We will not be putting much on these posts about the 1-24 On Iwo Jima, instead we will post links here leading to a very good, detailed website that will give way more information than we can deliver ourselves. We must warn you that some of the information will be graphic and upsetting, but will give you some idea about what Dad and the other Marines experienced.  If you see a mention of Baker Company, that is the unit Dad was assigned to.

******

On this day, February 27th,  Willard (Dad) and the 1-24 were called to build troop strength and replace Marines who were injured or killed, and were assigned to other units. Each new man was taken up on the Battalions muster rolls by today, Day Nine.  Field officers tried to tailor each mans assignment to his MOS, but with so many "basic" Marines this was not always possible.  Willard's MOS was 745 (Rifleman).  He continued this duty, with his M-1 Garand (he wrote down the serial number of that gun in his Diary - 1940712, manufactured in August of 1943), but he was also assigned to work with a BAR squad as an ammo carrier.  This additional assignment would cause a horrific change in his duties in the coming days...

On this day, February 26th,  Willard (Dad) and the 1-24 continued to be held back in reserve, closer to the beach, still doing support duty, carrying supplies, sorting discarded gear, assisting with the wounded, etc.  Today would have been their last day of relatively easy duty in the rear.  Starting tomorrow, things would be much different!

Dad told us a story not long before he passed about a Lieutenant sending him out to scout the perimeter.  He said that he figured that this was when he was going to "get it" and meet his end... But he had a praying mother, and she sent him an Armored Bible that he carried over his heart through the entire battle...

God protected Dad!  It was not his day to "Get It"!  He survived to come home, with his Armored Bible, and we still have it today!

On this day, February 25th,  Willard (Dad) and the 1-24 continued to be held back in reserve, closer to the beach, still doing support duty, carrying supplies, sorting discarded gear, assisting with the wounded, etc.

Today, February 23rd,  was the day that the 5th Marines raised the Flag on Mt. Suribachi, and the iconic photograph "Raising The Flag On Iwo Jima" was taken by Joe Rosenthal.  The photo has come to be regarded in the United States as  one of the most significant and recognizable images of World War II.  Dad said he could see that from where they were, at the far end of the beach near the "boat Basin".

On this day, February 23rd,  Willard (Dad) and the 1st Battalion, 24th Marines continued to be held back in reserve, closer to the beach, still doing support duty, carrying supplies, sorting discarded gear, assisting with the wounded, etc.  They may have been thinking they would avoid the worst of it, but that was not to be...

Today, February 22, 2022, (2-22-22) Mikey's Dad, Willard W Wemple would have been 100 years old.  We will be following Dad's time in the First Battalion, 24th Marines, Baker company, from February 19th to March 17th, 1945, in....Operation Detachment.

Being today is Dad's Birthday, HERE is a link to Dads page on the 1-24 site....

Willard W. Wemple

The page is a mix of the obituary Mikey and his brothers put together, as well as information that the Historian of the 1-24 page had gathered.  It is VERY interesting!  Especially to family members!

The historian, Geoffry and Mikey were able to finally trace down the names of the Marines in this photo....

One, Chester McCoy is still living and we have been in communication with him through his son, also Chester!  But check out Dads Page!  Its very cool!

On to the Narrative...

We will not be putting very much on these posts about the 1st Battalion-24th Marines (1-24) On Iwo Jima, instead we will post links here leading to a very good, detailed website that will give way more information than we can deliver ourselves. We must warn you that some of the information will be graphic and upsetting, but will give you some idea about what Dad and the other Marines experienced.  If you see a mention of Baker Company, that is the unit dad was in.
